According to Nanjing Power Supply Company of State Grid, by the end of this year, 900 intelligent manhole covers will be put into use on the transmission cable channels across the city of Nanjing. These manhole covers not only ensure the safety of citizens, but also can monitor real-time abnormal conditions such as water levels, gases, and temperatures in the cable channels, thereby ensuring power supply safety.

After the high-voltage transmission cables are laid underground, in order to facilitate maintenance, the power supply company will set up maintenance wells along the route. This morning, a reporter from Nanjing witnessed at a maintenance well near Xinhua Road in Jiangbei District that the maintenance personnel were inspecting the well cover, and this well cover is the latest intelligent well cover to be introduced. 
The reporter noticed that the intelligent manhole covers consist of two layers. The first layer is the common cast iron manhole cover, while the second layer is made of a composite material. The manhole covers are equipped with various sensing devices and monitoring equipment.

Zhai Chaoshao, a professional engineer from the Maintenance Team of the Cable Operation and Inspection Center of State Grid Nanjing Power Supply Company, said, "The load-bearing capacity of the second layer of composite material manhole cover can reach about one ton. That's equivalent to the weight of about a dozen normal people. Standing on it won't cause it to sink; it also integrates the functions of detecting illegal opening and abnormal tilt angles." 
On the spot, an electrician maintenance worker gave a demonstration. He lifted the second layer of the manhole cover and shook it. Due to the abnormal vibration of the manhole cover, the other maintenance worker's mobile phone immediately received a warning message about the manhole cover vibration. 
During daily use, once the alarm information from the manhole cover is received, the maintenance personnel will immediately rush to the scene to investigate potential hazards. Moreover, the intelligent manhole cover can also help the power supply department improve the maintenance efficiency and ensure reliable electricity supply for residents.

Zhai Chaoshao said, "High-voltage cable lines are the main arteries of urban power supply. If they fail, it will affect the electricity supply for residents. This manhole cover is also equipped with water level and smoke sensors, which helps us promptly grasp the operating environment of the cable channels."

As of the end of September, 379 intelligent manhole covers have been installed on the transmission cable channels throughout Nanjing. It is expected that by the end of this year, the number of intelligent manhole covers will reach 900. In the future, through intelligent manhole covers, it is hoped that joint intelligent monitoring and early warning for urban traffic, fire protection and environment can be achieved. While safeguarding the safety of people's feet, it can also enhance the urban management level of refinement.
